2024 aluminum alloy is a typical hard aluminum alloy – aluminum-magnesium-copper series aluminum alloy, containing 4.5% copper, 0.6% manganese, and 1.5% magnesium. Both 7075 and 2024 belong to the aviation aluminum family, but their specific alloying elements set them apart, 7075 contains a higher proportion of zinc and copper, which gives it excellent strength. On the other hand, 2024 contains a large amount of copper, which enhances its machinability.
1. Strength
7075 aluminum is known for its superior strength and is one of the strongest aluminum alloys currently available. In contrast, 2024 has good strength, but still not as good as the amazing strength of 7075.
2. Yield Strength
The yield strength of a material is referred to as the maximum stress at which the material begins to deform permanently. In contrast, the yield strength of 7075 aluminum sheet plate is higher than that of 2024 aluminum. This allows 7075 aluminum to withstand higher impacts and pressures for a period of time without deformation. It is determined by the chemical composition and heat treatment of the 7075 aluminum alloy.
3. Machinability
Although 7075 aluminum has high strength, its machinability is poorer than 2024. The high zinc and copper content in 7075 leads to its low machinability.
2024 has a higher copper content, is easier to process, and has better formability.
4. Corrosion resistance
Due to its high copper content, 2024 aluminum alloy has higher strength and toughness, but relatively speaking, its corrosion resistance is poor.
7075 aluminum alloy contains zinc, magnesium, copper and other elements.
