Factors affecting aluminum alloy density

  • Alloy composition: The density of aluminum alloys is closely related to its composition. The addition of different metallic elements will change the density of aluminum alloys. For example, copper and zinc have higher densities, and adding aluminum alloys will increase their densities; while magnesium and silicon have lower densities, and adding aluminum alloys will reduce their densities.
  • Processing technology: The processing technology of aluminum alloy will also affect its density. For example, cast aluminum alloys generally have a higher density than wrought aluminum alloys. In addition, processing processes such as heat treatment, rolling, and extrusion will also have a certain impact on the density of aluminum alloys.

Since aluminum usually accounts for more than 90% of aluminum alloy materials, aluminum alloy density is roughly around 2.70 g/cm³, with a rough range of 2.60-2.90 g/cm³

1050 aluminum alloy density calculation

Let’s take the simplest 1050 alloy as an example to calculate the density of aluminum alloy.

The chemical composition of 1050 aluminum alloy is:

Al 99.50, Si≤0.25, Cu≤0.05, Mg≤0.05, Zn≤0.05, Mn≤0.05, Ti≤0.03, V≤0.05, Fe 0.000~0.400

Since the chemical composition of 1050 aluminum alloy is a range data, accurate calculation cannot be carried out. The following table is the accurate chemical composition table of 1050 aluminum plate produced at a certain time. We can calculate the density of 1050 aluminum alloy through the following data.

The density of 1050 aluminum alloy can be calculated through the above table. The calculation method is as follows:

(99.5*2.70+0.15*2.33+0.02*8.96+0.05*1.74+0.05*7.14+0.05*7.3+0.03*4.5+0.05*4.96+0.1*7.86)/100 = 2.711567 ≈ 2.711

Here we calculate aluminum alloy density in g/cm³, and express density in lb/in³. The conversion formula between them is 1lb/in³=27.68g/cm³

Another expression for the density of 1050 aluminum alloy through unit conversion is 0.10lb/in³

Therefore, the density of 1050 aluminum alloy is 2.711g/cm³, or expressed as 0.10lb/in³.
